FPT Builds a School Dedicated to Supporting 1,000 Children Orphaned by COVID-19

FPT Chairman Dr. Truong Gia Binh recently pledged to open a school to educate and care for 1,000 Vietnamese children who have lost caregivers to COVID-19. FPT is committed to providing these children with ongoing training and care support over the next 20 years.

FPT offers these orphans housing, care and support, as well as general education training from FPT School and higher education training from FPT University and FPT Polytechnic, its vocational college. These training courses cover a wide range of topics, including technology, multimedia design, science, and others. The initiative, which would last 20 years, would cost more than 3.5 million USD per year.

This care and training facility will be located in FPT City Da Nang, a smart city with modern infrastructures such as a commercial center, an international hospital, and educational facilities at all levels.

“The pandemic's resurgence has caused various disruptions in my country, and it is heartbreaking to see it take away the caregivers of many young children,” Dr Binh said. “As one of Vietnam's leading corporations, FPT understands the importance of taking action. We want to take those children in, help them get through this difficult time, and help them grow into productive members of society,” he added.

“As a child of World War II, I learned that adversity breeds strong and self-sufficient individuals. I didn't grow up with my parents, but I did have friends. As a result, I want to foster an environment in which children can learn and grow together,” Binh explained. “I will definitely spend a lot of time with this school and these kids as a mentor and a friend,” he said.

“Over the past 33 years, FPT has helped many people realize their dreams and beliefs. We did not have a source of textbooks in 1991, when the country was still under embargo, so we opened our own training center and wrote our own textbooks with the goal of developing a high-skilled Vietnamese IT workforce. We dreamed of exporting software in 1999, and after only ten years, we became Vietnam's number one software exporter. He stated, "In 2006, we wanted to establish our own education models, and here we are today with over 90,000 students."

“Before I became a businessman, I was a scientist. As a result, I have a firm belief in the power of education,” Dr. Binh stated.

Aside from technology and telecommunications, education has long been one of FPT's top priorities. FPT Education Subsidiary, founded in 1999, has grown to become an education hub for 90,000 Vietnamese and international students, with campuses in six cities and provinces throughout Vietnam.
